For Immediate Release

Box Elder, South Dakota - The City of Box Elder has recently become aware that current and former vendors may have received spam or fraudulent emails appearing to come from the City.

To help verify that a message is legitimate, please check that the sender's email address ends in ".gov" and includes the "@boxeldersd.gov" domain. These are official City of Box Elder email addresses used by City staff. The City of Box Elder will never request that you wire money to a bank account. If you receive an email requesting a wire transfer, changes to banking information, or other payment-related instructions that appear to come from the City, do not respond or send payment until you have independently verified the request. If you receive a message that seems suspicious or requests sensitive information, we encourage you to contact City Hall directly at 605-923-1404, to verify the communication before responding or taking any action. Remember to make sure to report suspicious emails to your organization's IT department or email provider and delete the message after reporting it.

When in doubt, please call City Hall and confirm that the email originated from a City staff member. Thank you for helping us protect the security of our vendors and community partners.
